AIR FRYER BUTTERMILK CHICKEN – Chicken thighs marinated in buttermilk and air fried to perfection. They’re crisp and flavorful on the outside, moist and tender on the inside.
Lately I’ve been on an air fryer kick, specifically with cooking meat. These little appliances are amazing! There’s so much you can do with them.
I use a Philips XXL and have been very happy with results. If you’re in the market for an air fryer, I would recommend buying as large as you can. It makes cooking for groups much easier.
Air Fryer Buttermilk Chicken is the latest in the new recipes I’ve tried. I will definitely be adding this one to the regular rotation. Not only was the recipe simple, but the chicken was so tasty.
I would recommend not overcrowding the chicken thighs in the air fryer. That may cause the chicken to cook slowly or uneven. You can always cook in batches, if needed.
Here’s what you need to make Air Fryer Buttermilk Chicken…
- Chicken thighs (skin on, bone in)
- Buttermilk
- Salt
- Pepper
- Flour
- Garlic powder
- Paprika

- 3 cups buttermilk
- 3 3/4 teaspoons salt, divided
- 3 teaspoons pepper, divided
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 3/4 tablespoons garlic powder
- 3/4 tablespoons paprika
Instructions
- Rinse the chicken thighs and pat dry, place in a casserole dish.
- In a medium sized bowl, combine the buttermilk, 3 teaspoons of salt and 2 1/2 teaspoons of pepper. Whisk to combine.
- Pour the buttermilk mixture over the chicken thighs. Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or overnight.
- When ready to cook, preheat the airfryer to 400.
- In a flat and shower dish, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, the remaining 3/4 teaspoon salt, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of pepper.
- Remove each chicken thigh from the buttermilk and dredge in the flour mixture, shake excess flour and set aside.
- Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Arrange the chicken thighs in the air fryer basket, skin side up in a single layer. They should be spaced slightly apart. Depending on the size of your airfryer, you may need to cook the chicken in batches.
- Cook for 10 minutes.
- Turn the chicken over, cook for an additional 15 mintues (or more as needed to fully cook the chicken).
