CLASSIC HOT CHOCOLATE – Rich and creamy drinking chocolate. This recipe is so delicious and easy that you might never buy hot cocoa packets again!
Classic Hot Chocolate is one of my most favorite comfort foods of all time. If I could end my day with hot chocolate every night, I honestly would. I’m also a huge hot chocolate snob.
In case you didn’t know, hot chocolate and hot cocoa are not the same. Hot cocoa consists of milk and cocoa powder, and is generally more thin. Hot chocolate is thicker and contains real melted chocolate. I’m not sure what do call the drink that is hot water based with cocoa powder… besides fake.
Making your own hot chocolate at home is much easier than you might expect. I just recently learned how and I wish I had leaned it years ago. It’s so delicious! My husband described it as “liquid ganash.”
You can customize Classic Hot Chocolate to your own tastes. If you like your hot chocolate to be more rich use bittersweet chocolate chips. My preference is to have a combination of both bittersweet and semi-sweet chips. A little sprinkle of cinnamon on top would also be a nice touch.
For all my dairy-free friends out there, this recipe can be done using all dairy-free ingredients. I used Extra Creamy oat milk by Planet Oat and it was fantastic. No one would ever guess it was diary-free. I’m sure almond milk and coconut milk can produce similar results.
Here’s what you need to make Classic Hot Chocolate…

Ingredients
- 4 cups milk (oat milk works great too)

- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Homemade Whipped Cream (optional)
Instructions
- Pour milk into a small saucepan.
- Add the cocoa powder and sugar.
- Heat on medium to medium-low until warm, whisking frequently.
