SUNDAY DINNER ROLLS – Perfect, soft and buttery. These rolls are a must for special dinners and family traditions.
Several years ago I made it my mission to learn how to make really good rolls, the kind that my kids would brag to all their friends about and crave when they no longer live at home.
I was looking for the kind of rolls that could become a tradition for special occasions like Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving and Easter. The kind that instantly make my family feel spoiled and loved every time they eat them.
These are it!!! The recipe did take me a few tries before I was able to perfect it, but they are well worth the effort.
I’m not generally a patient person. So you know it’s really good if I’m willing to wait for the rise time.
Here’s what you need to make Sunday Dinner Rolls…

SUNDAY DINNER ROLLS - Perfect, soft and buttery. These rolls are a must for special dinners and family traditions.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons yeast
- 2 cups warm water
- 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/3 cup butter, softened (plus more, melted for brushing)
- 1 egg
- 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk
- 5-6 cups flour
Instructions
- In a stand mixer combine yeast, water and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Let stand until bubbly, about 5 mintues.
- Add the sugar, 1/3 cup butter, salt, dry milk, egg and 2 cups of flour. Using the hook attachment, beat until smooth.
- Add in the flour 1/2 cup at a time until the dough is soft and just barely past the point of being sticky.
- Knead the dough in the mixer for about 5 minutes.
- Set the dough in a large greased bowl, cover with greased plastic wrap and let it rise until double in size.
- Cut the dough into two large equal sized sections.
- Roll one section out into a 11x14 inch rectangle, brush with about half of the remaining melted butter.
- Cut the dough into 2 equal parts (the long way), then again into 6 equal parts (the short way). You should have 12 smaller rectangular-shaped dough pieces.
- Roll each smaller section of dough up and place seam-side down on baking sheet.
- Repeat with the second large section of dough.
- Cover rolls with greased plastic wrap and rise until double in size.
- Bake at 375 for 12-14 minutes.
